White

Christmas Exhibition

‘White’ brings a touch of festive sparkle to the Gallery this Christmas. As the title suggests we have invited a selection of artists to exhibit, all of whom work in white in all its forms. Exploring the range of white ceramic surfaces, the show will include the brightness and translucent qualities of porcelain and the white subtlety of glazed stoneware.

The show includes new work by Jack Doherty, Carina Ciscato, Rebecca Harvey, Ashley Howard, Kaori Tatebayashi, Susan Disley and Ikuko Iwamoto.

Conjuring up images of snow and ice, winter landscapes, light and peace, we hope to entice you into dreaming of a White Christmas.

14 March to 25 April 2009

Hamada Tomoo

First UK solo show

To mark the anniversary of the reopening we invited Tomoo, grandson of co-founder Shoji Hamada and a renowned potter in his own right, to work and exhibit at the Leach Pottery. During March 2009, Tomoo was at the pottery, working alongside our resident production potters and Lead Potter, Jack Doherty. His two week stay included a workshop and demonstration day on Saturday 14th March, followed by the opening of his first solo UK show which will include pieces made at the Leach Pottery plus work produced at his own pottery in Japan. Pots from this residency are still available for sale in our shop.

Dasiy Dunlop: New expressions

A new interpretation of the works of Bernard Leach

Daisy Dunlop is one of the most extraordinary craftspeople to have emerged in Cornwall in recent years. She has exhibited and sold internationally and is known for her soft, luminous jewellery that mixes cast resin with silver, gold, pearls and semi- precious stones. The resin pieces are subtle, blurred and irregular, with embedded poetry, plants, petals, icons, silks, maps and collage. Following the success of her 2008 commission to interpret the Hammershoi exhibition at the Royal Academy, the Leach Pottery commissioned Daisy in 2009, via the New Expressions programme, to interpret the work and philosophy of Bernard Leach for an exciting new exhibition. A range of 'standard-wear' pieces will be developed from this show which Daisy will continue to produce as a training vehicle for her students, recruited from University College Falmouth.  These Leach-influenced pieces are for sale through the Leach Pottery and other selected outlets.

A Festive Table

A collection of new tableware for the festive season (and other times), this exhibition ranges from work by Clive Bowen, inspired by the tradition of English slipware, to pieces by Walter Keeler, at the cutting edge of contemporary craft. Formed in Fire

New pots from eight kilns

Curated by Jack Doherty, Formed in Fire shows new work from the kilns of eight potters who explore the power of fire to alter and enhance clay forms. Their work demonstrates the interplay between the decisive acts of making and the sometimes serendipitous actions of flame and smoke.

14 June to 13 September 2008

An English Tea Ceremony
Contemporary Pots for the Tea Table

Curated by Jack Doherty

The Leach Pottery’s powerful and enduring links with Japan and its traditions are being explored on a new tangent, by deconstructing perceptions of a thoroughly English tradition with a hint of the ceremonial reverence conventionally adopted by the Japanese.

“The Japanese tea ceremony is a widely known cultural ritual.  We feel that this re-opening of the Leach Pottery offers an opportunity to reassess the English obsession with tea. We plan to produce an exhibition which gives a sense of a contemporary tea-time, showing new work which may be used in formal or relaxed occasions. We have invited eight potters, all working in different ways using a wide variety of materials and techniques, to interpret the concept and produce a collection of work for the show.” Jack Doherty

All work is for sale and features Jennifer Hall, Rebecca Harvey, Chris Keenan, Sun Kim, Kaori Tatebayashi, Ruthanne Tudball and James and Tilla Waters.

This exhibition also sees the launch of the first pieces of the new Leach ‘standardware’ aesthetically pleasing but functional handmade tableware designed by Jack Doherty and produced at the Leach Pottery.

John Leach

Continuing a tradition

John Leach is the eldest grandson of Bernard Leach and son of David Leach. Born upstairs here at the Pottery Cottage in 1939, he grew up using handmade pots every day and throwing pots for a Sunday treat.

Since 1965, John has run his own pottery at Muchelney in the heart of the Somerset Levels. His individual pieces can be found in this room and his range of kitchen ware is next door in the shop.
