1. Main Reception
2. Old Workshop
Where pots were thrown, decorated and glazed. Note the fireplace where Bernard used to hold impromptu debates on the nature of craft pottery. Up to 8 people would work in here.
3. Clay Room
Where the clay was prepared and recycled. Note the clay mixers, the pug machine for creating
‘slugs’ of clay for using on the wheel, and the bins for the powdered clay and glaze materials.
4. The Leach Wheels
The wheels were designed by David Leach and Dicon Nance. The flywheel is driven by the potter’s foot via a cranked pedal and provides steady momentum to the wheel head.
5. Kiln Room
Once open-sided to the south, this was the first building on the site. The climbing kiln, built in 1923, was the first of its kind in the western world. It was in use until the 1970s.
6. Exhibition
This new building hosts annually changing exhibitions examining the Leach legacy and the history of studio pottery.
7. New Workshops
A production studio where recently established potters and ceramics students work under the guidance of lead potter Jack Doherty.
8. Gallery
Housed in the old cottage, our contemporary selling
exhibition changes regularly and features the best of British and international craft pottery.
9. Shop
Your chance to buy ‘Standard Ware’ created on site, and to see work from our featured Cornish potters.
