Short Courses - Outline
Whether you are professional potter, student, a keen amateur or a complete beginner, an intensive few days working in the environment of Bernard Leach's own studio within the historic Leach Pottery is a unique and rarefied experience. This is an opportunity to brush up on techniques, explore new approaches, or just have dedicated time and space to develop your own practice.
Beginner / Intermediate Throwing Course
We offer a 3 or 5 day practice-based throwing course aimed at beginners who would like to learn basic throwing skills and for those who have some experience of throwing, and would like to further develop their skills. This is an opportunity to learn new skills and brush up on essential techniques.
The course will cover: Clay preparation – wedging techniques, centering clay on the wheel, throwing basic cylinders then moving on to different forms – Jugs, vases, plates, bowls etc. Practicing your preferred form, throwing to specific measurements and repeat throwing. Turning and finishing, pulling and attaching handles and decorating techniques.
The workshop includes an introductory assessment of needs, plus one-to-one tuition per day with one of our professional potters. Working in the historic Leach Pottery, within the environment of a professional pottery studio, museum and gallery offers a unique experience. You will have exclusive use of a wheel for the week and will be working in Bernard Leach’s own original studio space.
