Evening Class: Unstructured- Hand Building in Clay

This term's evening class is an opportunity for both beginners and improvers to attend an 'unstructured' class where students will have the space to work on their own personal projects alongside an experienced practitioner.   These classes will take place in the friendly and informal atmosphere in the Clore Learning Studio.

Autumn Term 2018

Thursday 27 September-22 November (no class 25 October)

  • 8 week course
  • 6.30pm - 8.30pm
  • Maximum 8 people (minimum 6 people)
  • Cost: £160 including all tuition and firings (approx 5 pieces)
  • All materials supplied: aprons and tools provided
  • A raku firing is included as part of every course

The course will start with a brief introduction to the studio, the equipment and tools,  the clay and how to prepare it,  and when best to use the three basic hand building techniques, pinch, slab and coil.  The sessions will then be left open for the students to work on their own personal projects.

Clay will be given out at the beginning of each session in 1 kg blocks and limited to 5 kg for the 8 weeks for students to make what they would like.  There will be height restrictions.

Each week at the main table, there will be a small guided element to the class for students to participate it in, and to get the most out of their work.

Some experience is recommended but not absolutely necessary. This course is designed for those who have some experience and would like to develop their own personal projects and clay skills with the advice of an experienced practitioner to guide the individual's personal projects.

As part of the course we include a Raku firing which is a unique and inspiring process where red hot pots are taken from the kiln and plunged into sawdust resulting in a crackled, glazed surface and produces a rich range of colours.
