We offer a 3 or 5 day practice-based throwing course aimed at beginners who would like to learn basic throwing skills and for those who have some experience of throwing, and would like to further develop their skills. This is an opportunity to learn new skills and brush up on essential techniques.
The course introduces a range of hand-building techniques including pinch pots, coil pots and slab work. Participants learn clay preparation, decorating techniques such as creative slip work, under-glazes, impressing, incising and making their own pottery stamp.
Taught by Kat Wheeler, our Deputy Studio Manager and one of our production potters in the workshop, this course will take you through the full process from clay preparation to glazing. You will learn throwing techniques for one-offs or production, turning and finishing, handle pulling, decorating and glazing techniques.
Half-day introductory taster courses throwing on the potter's wheel. These courses offer an introduction to throwing for beginners, covering: clay preparation, wedging, centering clay on the wheel and throwing basic cylinders. The workshop includes one-to-one tuition with one of our professional potters.
We have an ongoing programme of masterclasses, workshops and demonstrations from visiting potters and staff onsite. They vary from a few hours to a few days.
