The Essential Matter of Clay
A series of three workshops run at two week intervals in which participants will enter into the spirit of experimentation and imagination through a series of practical clay workshops, demonstrations and discussions.
Dates and times: Tuesdays February 28, March 14, March 28 2017, 10.30am - 3pm
Maximum number of students: 8
Cost: £210 per person to include tuition, materials and firing
Workshop 1 - Making
The first practical workshop will begin by focusing on tactile sense which will include some quick ‘limbering up’ sketches in clay, moving quickly on to more formal construction methods which will be combined with unorthodox ways of seeing and doing. Assemblage methodology will be discussed and used to achieve an interesting surface dynamic. Slip application will be demonstrated and experimented with in the form of underlay/overlay, line drawing with sharps, infusing with oxides suspended in water, blending etc.
Workshop 2 - Glaze application
Group discussion on aesthetic and chemical reaction results of firing and how best to move forward. Practical glaze demonstration of dipping, pouring, flicking, splashing and overlaying.
Workshop 3 - Lustres
Group discussion on aesthetic and chemical reaction results of earthenware firing and how best to detail focal points with precious metals, iridescents and onglaze brights (example shown). Practical demonstration on how and why to apply lustre.
