Most of Phil’s work is wheel thrown although a proportion is press moulded. The pots are glazed at 1300deg. C in a gas fired salt kiln, an oil fired reduction kiln and the three chamber wood fired kiln. The glazes make use of local materials, particularly wood-ash, but also using local stone dusts and clays. The salt glaze takes advantage of a technique discovered in the 15th Century, using common salt, which produces a hard and durable glaze with a rich and sensuous surface.
