Leach Pottery Installation: Aaron Angell, Steven Claydon, Amy Hughes, Rosanna Martin Dr David Paton

Leach100 Commission Artists: 2021

Available to view in the Leach Pottery Museum: November to December 2021

As part of our Leach100 celebrations, we invite you to discover installations throughout the Museum created by contemporary artist-potters in response to historic and contemporary themes around the Leach legacy.

The artists were commissioned by the Leach Pottery to develop new works and practice exploring the relationships between place, landscape, material, legacy and narratives.

These works were recently displayed at the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent and are now installed throughout the Museum:

Aaron Angell - unglazed forms wood-fired in a Japanese anagama-style kiln. This traditional method of firing glazes the pots naturally with melted wood ash, allowing the kiln to be used as a decorative tool rather than a means to an ends.

Steven Claydon - ‘Mines, Bombs and Spirits’ is an installation that explores the roles of pot as a physical and cultural form. This work examines the contradictions and ambiguity found in objects that sit between function and ritual.

Amy Hughes - responding to the Leach aesthetic of brushwork, Amy crafted her own ‘brushes’ from found materials in St Ives. Each of her 9 pots explore a different brush pattern.

Rosanna Martin & Dr David Paton - this collaborative work explores the legacy of industry on the Cornish landscape. Using found and extracted matter these pieces examine the relationships between natural and human processes.

With funding from Arts Council England, the Garfield Weston Foundation, and Cornwall Council, the Leach Pottery offered dedicated Talent Development to open call international residencies and a number of artistic commissions, to foster creativity and professional development.
