People and Pottery

21 May – 2 October 2022, Cube Gallery

People & Pottery shares the engaging personal stories of the ceramics in our lives. It is informed by our community and groups the Leach Pottery works in partnership with on our Community Programme. It shows the unique values that we all place on ceramics which we could easily take for granted, and is one of the last in our Leach 100 exhibition series.

There are shared stories of peoples’ favourite pieces of pottery: it could be an everyday-mug, a sentimental piece, a family heirloom, something mass-produced or even handmade, perfect or imperfect - each piece has a value.

On display are pots from peoples’ homes and hearts: from factory-made mugs and plates to early examples of Leach Pottery made 100 years ago, to pieces by Bernard Leach, Janet Leach, William Marshall, Trevor Corser, Michael Cardew and John Bedding. Most of these pots, usually found in kitchens and living rooms, are seen for the first time in a public exhibition.

There are also pots to handle and space to share your thoughts and creativity. There are even audio recordings from the pots’ owners, sharing why the piece is important to them.
