Large Triple-Gourd Vase : HDX02

£1,200.00

Triple-gourd stoneware vase, oxidation firing, transparent glaze with cobalt oxide liner. Made by Helen Doherty at the Leach Pottery.

‘Lest we Forget: Saluting the custodians of beauty and order, St Ives, 2022’

This pot grew out of my investigation into what or, to be more precise, who, lies behind the picturesque façade of St Ives. It is an acknowledgement of those often invisible people who maintain the town’s aesthetic appeal. On early morning walks to the harbour from the Leach Pottery, l noticed how the town is cared for by people who may not be immediately evident; guerrilla gardeners of roadside kerbs, rubbish collection volunteers, garbage disposal teams. Drawings of idyllic views of St Ives, including Barnoon Chapel, Porthmeor Beach and the coastal path to Zennor, are interrupted by depictions of the garbage disposal teams, who tirelessly maintain, often without due recognition, the order, beauty and cleanliness of this town.
