The Leach Studio returns with an exhibition of new pots exploring ‘space’, as inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma which acknowledges negative space and gaps that are literal, visible, as well as perceived.
The Studio space is also where pots are given life and form. During the day, it is where Leach Standard Ware is made and also where potters explore and express their creative voices. In the Studio, multiple ideas, histories, materials and processes meet; a location for an emergent distillation of creative practice consolidating ideas, materials and histories in the body and soul of the pots.
At the level of creation, it is in the potter’s hands that the plastic clay is coaxed and formed into a pot: a multivarious agent of expression and function, from a container for space to a canvas representing and interrogating its own space, to an object that can singularly or collectively occupy and effect a space.
In ‘Studio_Space’ there are exciting new pots from Studio stalwarts like Lead Potter Roelof Uys and Production Potter Britta James, to the new Leach Apprentice Ellie Woods and German Volunteer Esther Bahl.
