Matthew Tyas: Shop
We present here a collection of work by Leach Pottery Curator and Deputy Director Matthew Tyas. It includes work from his 2025 exhibition: Matthew Tyas: At the Wheel - A Curator in Mashiko, made during his two-month international artist’s residency at the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in Japan. Matthew created a new body of pots which showcased the spirit of openness and acceptance: experimenting with local materials and searching for a rhythm between discovery and consistency.
Matt explores the expressiveness of the clay surface and develops glazes that respond to one another in the heat of the kiln. Clay is the foundation of the pot, so there is often a tension between glaze application and allowing space for the clay’s expression.
