Black and White Plate with Akae, made by Tomoo Hamada
Tomoo Hamada was born in Mashiko in 1967; the second son of Shinsaku and the grandson of Leach Pottery co-founder, Shoji Hamada, he began potting at the age of three, spending time in both his father’s and grandfather’s studios. In 1994 he became a full time potter, sharing his father’s studio, visiting the Leach Pottery in St. Ives for the first time the following year.
Tomoo has continued to develop as a potter and is much more daring in the use of unconventional shapes and overglaze decorations than his elders.
He continues to work in Mashiko Pottery and exhibits regularly in Gallery St Ives, Japan.
